If the top surface of the water in the pond is higher than your basement floor, then yes, you need to worry about groundwater. Is the pond a stormwater retention pond? Or is it just for looks? Is it aerated? If not, and the water is just stagnant, what about mosquitos? Do they treat the water for mosquitos?

Whether or not there is a pond nearby, always check for any indication of seepage in and around a foundation. Don't forget to check on the average rainfall in your area. Talk to neighbors about the rainfall and if they ever had any problems with flooding. Find out the elevation of the house property in relation to the pond. If the pond overflows, will it come toward your property or away from it?
